Other Nutrient Sources

Suet

The rendered beef fat from kidneys and livers: high energy food. Attracts all types of birds including Woodpeckers, Jays, Nuthatches, Chickadees, Songbirds and other outdoor pets.

Insects

The preferred food source for Wrens, Bluebirds, Robins, etc. Mealworms are available at many stores for use in feeding wild birds.

Nuts

The meats of nuts are excellent food sources for all wild birds. Commonly used nuts are peanuts, sunflower seeds, pistachios, walnuts, pecans, filberts and almonds. Several Better Bird blends contain high levels of the most desirable nut meats:

  • Cardinal Blend
  • Deck, Porch N’ Patio®
  • Nut N’ Berry®
  • All Songbirds Blend
  • Woodpecker, Nuthatch N’ Chickadee®

Water

Water is required for all living things. Birds not only require water to replace lost body fluids, but also need water sources such as birdbaths for general grooming and health. Make sure you clean birdbaths frequently.

Nectar

Hummingbird nectar is a sugar-water mixture that simulates the nectar found in flowers. It provides a vital energy source for hummingbirds, supporting their intense activity levels and quick metabolism.

Grit

Birds cannot chew. The bird’s gizzard helps grind up seeds for digestion. Grit can be purchased and added to regular food or can be fed in a separate feeder.
